After three seasons in Serie B, Vieri returned to Serie A for the 1995–96 season, when he joined Atalanta, scoring 9 goals in 21 appearances. His first big move came about when he was spotted by Juventus who signed him from Atalanta for a fee of €2.5 million for the 1996–97 season

Things to Know:

This shirt has been worn by Claudio Caniggia during the Serie B game Atalanta vs Pistoiese that took place in Bergamo on October 24th 1999. At the end of the game Caniggia gave this shirt to Andrea Agostinelli, Pistoiese’s manager, who recently made this piece of history being part of our collection.

Did you Know?

Claudio Caniggia joined Atalanta the first time in 1989. He played for Atalanta three season, playing 85 games and scoring 26 goals.In September 1996 his mother committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of her building and Caniggia did not play in the 1996–97 season. He returned to play for Boca in 1997–98 but his appearances were sporadic as he missed out on the 1998 World Cup squad. After another season of inactivity he re-joined Atalanta in Serie B, but left after one season following a dispute with coach Giovanni Vavassori.

Did you Know?

In the 2000-2001 season Atalanta went back to Serie A. An incredible 7th position was reached at the end of the season. Italy Cup quarter finals were also reached due an excellent job of Mister Vavassori. Nicola Ventola with Atalanta, he had a more successful league season, scoring 10 goals in 28 Serie A appearances during the 2000–01 season.

Things to Know:

Atalanta B.C. lost its momentum it had built in its first two Serie A seasons in its stint, eventually being relegated following a playoff against Reggina. The championship was such competitive than Atalanta was only four points away from repeating its 9th place from the 2001-02 season, but instead had to face Serie B competition, losing key players such as Cristiano Doni, Luciano Zauri and Ousmane Dabo to bigger clubs.
