Montella began his club career in Serie C1 at Empoli in 1990 before moving to Serie B club Genoa in 1995, where he scored 21 goals in his only season with the club, at the end of which he lifted the Anglo-Italian Cup. He then moved up to Serie A to city rivals Sampdoria, where he remained three years, until 1999, when he moved to Roma in a 50 billion lire (about €25.823 million) transfer. Montella made his Serie A debut with Sampdoria on 8 September 1996, against Perugia.

The team in the season 1998-1999 completed its fall from grace by being relegated to Serie B, just eight years after its league title in 1990-91. Similarly to Napoli the year before, the club was no longer a financial power when it came to signing players, and its star player Ariel Ortega did not deliver to the degree Sampdoria had hoped for.

Due to Perugia failed to protect its place in Serie A, Castellini was signed by Sampdoria for the season 1997-1998. With the team he played two Serie A season, but in the second season Sampdoria concerned 3rd largest number of goals in the season, made the side relegated to Serie B. The Blucerchiati failed to return to Serie A by finished 5th, thus Castellini was signed by Serie A struggler Bologna.

Did you Know?

Fabio Bazzani moved to Sampdoria in 2002, where he scored 16 goals in his first season with the blucerchiati in Serie B and 13 goals in his second campaign with Sampdoria, when in Serie A. During his second season with Sampdoria, he was capped three times in the Italian team. He was loaned to Lazio in exchange for Simone Inzaghi in January 2005, but failed to impress with the biancazzurri and returned to Sampdoria at the end of the season.

Things to Know:

U.C. Sampdoria returned to Serie A after a four year-absence, and immediately re-established itself as a team on the top half of the domestic championship. Goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli offered crucial experience, but apart from him did the bulk of the squad play in the 2002-03 Serie B, with top goalscorers Fabio Bazzani and Francesco Flachi quickly adjusting themselves to the higher pace of Serie A. Midfielders Sergio Volpi and Angelo Palombo also stood out. Right back Aimo Diana even earned a call-up to the national team following his performances.

Did you Know?

Sampdoria finished 9th, which was sufficient to qualify for the Intertoto Cup. Manager Walter Novellino left at the end of the season to join Torino, and was replaced by Reggina coach Walter Mazzarri.

Things to Know:

In the summer of 2003, Zenoni was loaned to U.C. Sampdoria by Juventus F.C. with an option to sign permanently for 10 million euro. He was loaned out to the club once again in the summer of 2004, and at the end of the 2004–05 season, after almost helping the team qualify for the UEFA Champions League, he was signed permanently by Sampodoria for €1M. After several seasons in Genoa, in 2008, Zenoni joined Bologna.

Berti started playing professionally with A.C. Prato, in the third division, representing Olbia Calcio in the same level, in 1990–91. From 1991 to 2007, he alternated between the Serie A and B, with Genoa C.F.C., Pisa Calcio, A.C. Ancona, U.S. Città di Palermo (playing 42 matches in the Sicilians 2004 top flight promotion), A.S. Roma, A.C. Reggiana 1919, Ravenna Calcio, Empoli F.C., Parma F.C., Torino F.C., ACF Fiorentina, U.C. Sampdoria and A.C. Cesena. In June 1998, Gianluca Berti was transferred to Perugia, in exchanged with Stefano Guidoni, but in July he left for Ravenna. Aged 41, after still managing 11 first division appearances for Sampdoria, in 2006–07, Berti re-joined the third level in 2008, moving to Novara Calcio, in the Serie C1/Lega Pro Prima Divisione. He left professional football in 2009, joining Eccellenza Tuscany side Jolly & Montemurlo.

In the 2007-2008 U.C. Sampdoria had a successful season in the domestic league, finishing in sixth place. The club also captured Antonio Cassano from Real Madrid, with the notorious troublemaker settling in well at Sampdoria, helping the club to European qualification. The season also saw the first Serie A derbies between Sampdoria and Genoa C.F.C. since 1995, with Sampdoria winning the second one with 1-0, following a goalless draw in the beginning of the league campaign.During the transfer window of 2008, Sampdoria bought half of the registration rights of Mirante for €1.5M from Juventus, on 19 July 2009 he went on loan to Parma F.C. in exchange for Marco Rossi. In June 2010, Sampdoria decided not to buy Rossi but sold Mirante to Parma

Things to Know:

During the 2008-2009 season, Cassano confirmed to have temperamentally improved, also becoming vice-captain for the team behind Angelo Palombo. After the January signing of Giampaolo Pazzini from Fiorentina, Cassano managed to form a fruitful striking partnership with the former Viola forward, that was praised by both media and Sampdoria supporters, and led club chairman Riccardo Garrone to compare it with striking duo of Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini that led Sampdoria to win their only Scudetto to date, an opinion that was later shared also by both Vialli and Mancini. Cassano scored 12 goals in Serie A and helped Sampdoria to reach the Coppa Italia final that season, scoring a goal in the semi-final against the Serie A Champions, Inter. In the final, Sampdoria were defeated by Lazio in a penalty shoot-out, with Cassano missing the first penalty.

The 2016-2017 season represents for the team the 70th anniversary. To celebrate this anniversary a special vintage look shirt was made by the team’s supplier Joma. This special shirt has been used only in very few games and limited to 500 pieces. The first 100 numbered shirts were reserved to the team. The last 400 numbered shirts were sold to the public in an exclusive box. This shirt was used by David Ivan during the Tim Cup’s game against Bassano.
