Campos Josè

Things to Know:

This is one of the most Jorge Campos known shirts. It is a World Cup shirt and it was as usually designed by the player himself. But what makes this shirt so special is the fabric and its unique style. While Campos was usual to own design his uniforms, all of them were completely handcrafted by authentic craftsmen. But obviously all of his shirts, also if of the same style, were all different because they all had small details different from each other. This shirt was also hand sprayed in all of its colorful details. The fabric is not printed but all of the colors were hand sprayed making this shirt extremely raw and heavy as you can also see while fit by the player.

On the international stage, Campos started as goalkeeper for Mexico in two FIFA World Cup tournaments: 1994 and 1998. He would eventually collect 130 caps. Campos was invited several times to play with the Rest of the World Team against clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Milan. His last game with Mexico was in 2004 in a friendly against Tecos.

Blanco has played for Mexico at three World Cups; he was part of the squad at France ’98, Korea-Japan 2002 and South Africa 2010. He was also a member of the Mexico team that won the Confederations Cup in 1999 where he was the tournament’s leading scorer with six goals, including the winning goal at the Estadio Azteca against Brazil in the final. He was awarded the “Silver Shoe” and “Silver Ball” for outstanding player of the tournament. Blanco holds the record along with Brazilian Ronaldinho as the highest scoring players in the Confederations Cup with nine goals, three in 1997 and six in 1999. In the selection for the final 23-man squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, then Mexico national team coach Ricardo La Volpe left Blanco out of the team. While the ostensible reason given was that Blanco was frequently injured and not in good form, some people considered this to be a consequence of the previous year’s constant bickering, due to on-going personal problems between coach and player. Blanco became part of the squad that played the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, scoring one penalty goal, and the 2007 Copa América, where he scored 2 goals also from penalty kicks. On 13 September 2008, he earned his 100th cap for his country in its 2–1 World Cup qualifier victory over Canada at Tuxtla Gutiérrez, coming on with only 15 seconds left in regulation time. After the match, he announced his retirement from international football. Blanco announced his return to the national team in May 2009. He became a regular member of returning coach Javier Aguirre’s squad, playing in all the games throughout the Hexagonal of the World Cup Qualifying. Since then, Blanco has become an important factor in Mexico’s team regaining form and confidence. On 10 October 2009, Blanco provoked the first opposition own goal and scored the second goal in a 4–1 victory over El Salvador to help Mexico clinch a spot in the 2010 World Cup. On 17 June 2010, he scored a penalty in the 78th minute of the 2–0 win against France at the World Cup finals in South Africa. With this goal he became the first Mexican to score a goal in three World Cup tournaments and the third-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history. Blanco is considered by many to be one of the greatest penalty kickers of all time. He also has a penalty-taking record; out of a total of 58 taken, he has only missed two. Blanco played a tribute game in 2014 against Israel at the Estadio Azteca, which symbolized his official retirement from international football. Mexico went on to win the match 3–0.

Did you Know?

The 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup was the seventh edition of the Gold Cup, the football championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF). For the first time since 1993, the tournament was held in more than one country, with games played in both United States and Mexico. The games were played in Mexico City, Miami, and for the first time in a northern U.S. city, Foxborough. The format of the tournament stayed the same as in 2002: twelve teams were split into four groups of three, the top two teams in each group would advance to the quarter-finals. Colombia and Brazil were invited, with the latter sending an Under-23 team. The United States’ Landon Donovan put four past Cuba in the quarterfinals in a 5–0 win, but the defending champions went out to Brazil in the semi-finals. The South Americans scored a goal in the 89th minute and added a penalty in extra time to win 2–1. Mexico won their first championship since 1998, beating Brazil 1–0 in extra time.

Did you Know?

The CONCACAF Cup (officially the CONCACAF Cup presented by Scotiabank for sponsorship reasons) was an international football play-off match to determine CONCACAF’s entry into the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. The 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup winner United States played against the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winner Mexico on 10 October 2015 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, United States. Mexico won the match 3–2 after extra time, therefore qualifying for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Even though the CONCACAF Gold Cup takes place on a biennial basis, under previous guidelines prior to 2013, only the winners of the Gold Cup that was held two years before the FIFA Confederations Cup qualified as CONCACAF’s representative. For example, Mexico won the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup and qualified for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. This, in turn, lowered the prestige of the alternating tournament, with CONCACAF teams fielding weaker rosters in the Gold Cup that was held on the same year as the Confederations Cup because the result would have no bearing on qualification for the Confederations Cup. Many teams that were also involved in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup during that year put less focus on the Gold Cup. CONCACAF announced the introduction of a play-off match on 5 April 2013. Starting from the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, the CONCACAF representative would be decided by a play-off between the two CONCACAF Gold Cup winners prior to the Confederations Cup. Then CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb stated this “will allow the Champion of every single Gold Cup edition to have the same competitive opportunity to represent CONCACAF at the international level.” In the case where the same national team wins both Gold Cup tournaments, no play-off is played and the team qualifies directly to the Confederations Cup. Following CONCACAF’s decision to end their affiliation with Traffic Sports USA due to the 2015 FIFA corruption case, Major League Soccer’s sister company Soccer United Marketing was chosen as commercial representative for the match.

Vela Carlos

Did you Know?

Regarded as a promising player in his youth, gifted with skill and natural flair, former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger described Vela as a player who is “…naturally gifted, quick, intelligent and with very good technique”. He also labelled him as a “special talent”, stating “I like [Vela’s] intelligence and his pace. He scores goals but he can also create them.” Vela’s playing style has been described as being able to “beat his man off the dribble,” and “his linking up with teammates presents danger. [Looking through his first season] shows his willingness to work combinations across the entire attacking third of the pitch.”A left-footed player, Vela is known for his speed, technique, and vision. Collin Carpio has noted that while Vela is typically deployed on the right wing, he can also play as a striker, commenting in 2016: “when he’s in-form, the 27-year-old can be lethal cutting inside from the flanks, and he’s proven that he can setup goals for his teammates.” He is known for scoring chipped goals. In May 2017, Carlos Vela was called up by Juan Carlos Osorio to be included in the roster to participate in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. Appearing as a starter in Mexico’s first group stage match against Portugal, he would provide a low cross assist for Javier Hernández to score Mexico’s first goal in a match that was eventually tied 2–2. He would go on to appear in Mexico’s final group stage match against Russia and third place play-off against Portugal.
